SPOILER: the Key to Time arc (season 16 of Doctor Who's classic series)




What you need to know:
"What if you could go to different earths? Same planet, different dimension and universe. Rose Tyler has found the gateway.


The Doctor is currently travelling with Donna. He is on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless and the powerless throughout the whole multiverse of multiple universes. He has lost Rose to Earth-776. Interdimensional travel seems impossible so he can never meet her again.
Rose Tyler has formed a Torchwood team of Who-Sliders - Computer specialist and expert Jade Wells, Quantum Physicists Professor Arthur Maximillian and Conn Mallory, Captain Jack Harkness (of Earth-777), Max Evans and his girlfriend and Medic Liz Parker - all from Earth-776. Together they slide from parallel earth to parallel earth, trying to find Earth-777, where the Doctor is located... but for the time being they have been entrusted with a special mission to locate the six segments of the Key To Time, once located by the Doctor himself, or the Multiverse will be at risk from the Black Guardian.
Lassar, a bloodthirsty Krillitane alien, was leading the Black Guardian's Sliding team which has broken up. Logan St Claire - a Quinn duplicate from an alternate reality - and Lassar have been imprisoned by Captain Archer of the Parship Enterprise. Suzie Costello (used to be second in command of Torchwood on earth-777, died a number of times too) died on Earth-501. The location of Bilis Manger (the team's historian) and the "Editor" (expert on transmat and technology) is currently unknown, they may be still on Earth-501.

The Doctor is a Time Lord - a time-traveller from the alien world called Gallifrey [Universe-777, the Stargate Universe] who travels in space and time thanks to his TARDIS which looks like a police box, bigger inside than outside. When the Doctor is severely injured or even killed, he will regenerate into a new appearance and body. He is currently in his tenth incarnation (9th regeneration). He is the survivor of the Time War which saw his homeworld Gallifrey destroyed completely.

The original who-Sliders, after having managed to travel back to Earth-001, have kept experimenting with dimensional travel. Years have passed since the Sliders returned. They are no longer able to slide and have lost contact with the Doctor.

Soon enough, SG-1 and Rose's WhoSliders returned back to Cheyenne Mountain in the US. Rose asked Jack whether SG-1 had another Stargate. He said, yes, we have the one from Antarctica.
So Rose got out her mobile and converted the Stargate in Cheyenne Mountain into the fourth segment of the Key to Time. This shocked SG-1 and the other personnel on the base, including of course, General Hammond, who was about to faint. "What on earth have you done with our Stargate, miss!" he shouted at her.
"It was part of the Key to Time. It is needed by the White Guardian. You have another Stargate, you can start to use that one instead." Rose answered.
"Well there is a problem. The Antarctica Stargate was made of a different alien technology. We don't know how to use it. You are going to be stranded here I think", General Hammond replied.
"Also we have people off-world which we cannot contact now. SG-13 was on a mission, in particular." Hammond continued.
"General, can we have a look at this Stargate?" Professor Arthur asked.
"I would really like to see it", Conn said.
"Perhaps we can help you get it up and running", Rose said.
"You better do so, or you will all be in trouble." General Hammond said as he picked up a phone to make a call to get the other Stargate here.
"We don't even know who built this other Stargate" he added after making the call. "Could have been bunch of other aliens for all we know. A specialist from Area 51 is coming over too."
"Who is it?" Rose asked.
"They didn't tell me. We will see when he or she gets here."


Some time later..

The specialist arrived at Cheyenne Mountain. Rose and the others were wondering who would turn up. Whether it would be someone they didn't know on their home earths, or an alternate version of someone they did.
"Hello everyone! My name is Quinn Mallory and I am the specialist from Area 51, as you probably already know!"
Conn was almost shocked. This person was his alternate, he could tell for sure. A different name but the resemblance was there and it was amazing. What an experience.
Quinn looked at Conn soon enough "oh.. who are you?"
"I'm your double from an alternate reality. Different choices. Different name too. Different person really." Conn replied
"Well I must take a look at the Stargate we have to analyse and get working if possible."
"It's here, it's been brought over." General Hammond said.
"So this is the gate. It looks fascinating! Did anyone decode the symbols?" Quinn asked.
"I did", Indy explained. The symbols had been Wraith ones. The Wraiths were vampire beings which were encountered by the Atlantis expedition in the Pegasus galaxy. So the Wraiths had built their own Stargate network..
This itself raised questions. Why would they do that and which gates would this new gate connect to?
The existing gate network created by the Ancients plus some more specifically Wraith gates, or just other Wraith gates on Wraith infested worlds only?

Were the Wraiths of this universe more sophisticated, techologically, than the ones in Universe-777 which she had faced once with the Doctor?
The Wraith Gate was set up in the Gate Room. It was connected to the computer which would serve to dial the network. The attempt was started. Walter dialed the first chevron. The gate rotated, and began the sequence. After more chevrons were encoded, the gate wooshed. So far it was very similar to the other gate. Now the location used was that planet Rose and the team kept using to Slide. A flying drone was sent through the gate, to survey the planet. Well, to see if the coordinates were righeht.
Captain Jack kept thinking of the inscription on the gate. He said mathematically it did not make sense. The images sent back by the drone were not what they expected. It was some other world, uninhabitable and definitely not the one the WhoSliders came from.
So Captain Jack and Professor Arthur studied the inscribed message even more. They eventually understood there was a reference to a very different mathematics. One where, in effect, 2+2=3....
This did not make much sense, yet, it was how the Wraith technology worked. So they had to think as the Wraiths did. Doing that helped them translate the coordinates they had, to the ones they had to enter.
So their work was complete and it was time to say their goodbyes. They used the Stargate this time successfully and went to the usual planet, P10X-920-333 in this universe.

Earth-Prime was in a sorry state. Few were aware that in fact it had been taken over, invaded by evil Kromaggs from other dimensions.
The Kromaggs were now thinking of exterminating all the humans, starting one by one.
The Kromaggs had covertly taken over human buildings and even human technology itself. The Kromaggs had set up a world-wide net to prevent any unauthorised translocations, or sliding as humans called it.
But what had happened to the original Who-Sliders? Were they still alive?

Part of the changes Tavlar had mentioned, started from CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS in DC Comics. But it was not just that. Gallifrey's destruction - indeed the Time War - had to do with the rest of the changes too.
