How can one explain what happened to Number Ten? He’s one of the new arrivals in the Village. We have many new arrivals, after most of our population left, including the Butler, in our latest experiment on Number Six. Remember how most of the village people left, even Number Six, all thinking that they had regained their long lost freedom. Well some of them we did allow to remain in London, but the rest we brought back once the experiment was over. That includes Number Six. Pity that for the experiment, our Number Two had to retire. But we have promoted Number Three to Number Two now! Such a beautiful town we have, gentlemen. It’s a bright sunny day this morning. Yes. I was telling you about Number Ten. He was busy with one of his investigations one of these days, when he encountered our own Number Six. Number Six had once more managed to make an escape by hiding in an empty oil tank that was lined up to leave the village in the Potemkin. He had studied the sea operations quite carefully, the naughty fellow managed to slip away once more…

Chapter Nine
————

The Enterprise was suffering from the barrage of firepower
from all nine Cyber ships. The battle was not going well. Two
of the ships had been crippled, but the remaining seven were
fully operational. The Cyberfleet did have a major disadvantage
though, speed. The Enterprise was more manoeuvrable and agile
than the attacking ships.
“Forward shields have dropped to 83%. Aft shields are
holding at 79%.” reported Worf.

Chapter Seven
———————

Ace tossed and turned. She couldn’t get to sleep. She was
thinking about the Doctor, how she’d run out on him, how she’d failed
him. She didn’t like Cybermen, ever since the first encounter on
Earth in 1988 when they’d tried to take control of the Nemesis statue.
The statue had destroyed the entire Cyberfleet – or so she’d thought.
Then came the showdowns with the psychic circus, the Destroyer (and
Morgaine), Gabriel Chase in Perivale, and most recently the
confrontation with Fenric. That had almost broken her. She’d thought
her trust in the Doctor had been shattered, but he’d explained the
situation afterwards. The Doctor had suggested a short holiday,
perhaps to the Eye of Orion. She thought back to that moment when
they left England, (how she’d been glad to get out of those clothes
and into her normal attire).
“I think I could do with a holiday.” the Doctor had said. Ace
dropped off to sleep and, as she slept, thoughts flooded though her mind.

Chapter Five
————

Sarah looked on in horror as the lifeless body of the Doctor
drifted away from the ship.
“You’ve got to do something!” she exclaimed.
“There’s nothing I can do from here.” Riker said, by way of an
apology. He turned to Q, “Bring him back onboard Q.”
“I would, but you see he’s not really there. I tried looking
for him but I can’t find him. That’s why I asked you the question.”
“That was horrible. It was just a despicable trick to get us to
tell you.” Sarah blurted out. She had been close to tears at the
sight, but now she was regaining her composure somewhat and anger was
replacing grief.

Chapter 3
———

Out in the infinite reaches of space there is life. Not all
life is the same, some lifeforms are limited by intelligence and
technology. Some are not. The smiling figure sitting on the saucer
section was from a race with no limits. Q smiled. Time to pay a
visit on some old friends.

Jean-Luc Picard, Captain of the Enterprise, sat in his ready
room. He had just finished a report to Starfleet command, and was
trying, for the fourth time, to get into Beverly’s book. This time he
was having some success, the book was indeed getting good. The door
chimed and Picard groaned inwardly.
“Enter.” he called out. The doors stayed shut. He repeated the
word, the doors stayed closed. He got up and went to the doors, which
opened at his presence. There was no-one at the door and Picard
stepped back, the doors closing. Strange, he thought, and turned back
to the couch…

…to find somebody sitting reading his book. The figure had
his back to the captain, but when he spoke Jean-Luc felt icy fingers
crawl up his back.
“Mon Capitan. I’ve missed you.” said the all-too-familiar voice
of Q.

Chapter One
———–

The Enterprise rocked under the onslaught. The Romulan Warbird
was winning the battle, but at a cost. Its warp engines had been
disabled in a lucky shot, compliments of Mr Worf, and the Warbird was
now incapable of firing torpedoes. Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander
Riker and Lt Commander Data were dead.

Prologue: In 1979 I started writing a *fanzine* story in which the
Doctor (from the “Doctor Who” universe) met up with the crew of the
“original” “Star Trek” series. It was the first thing I’d written
since graduating from college fifteen years before, and, with the
assistance of an excellent author and very good friend, Jacqueline
Lichtenberg, was able to finish it. The result turned out to be an
enjoyable reading experience to a number of people. The story was not
intended to be a satire, it was intended to be an honest
representation of what might happen if these two particular universes
met. It was intended as a fanzine in the most classic tradition of
that particular genre. Continue reading The Doctor And The Enterprise (Part 1)
