Who Sliders 7 – Doctor Who and the Sliders: The Early Days

Spread the love

This is a crossover fanfic in my fan-series featuring Doctor Who (the Fifth Doctor – as played by Peter Davison in the classic BBC tv series Doctor Who) – and the Sliders. Currently I’m reposting my older WhoSliders volume 1 series which features mainly the Doctor (pre-time war) and the Sliders plus the 5th Doctor’s companions.

Story (C) 2001-2020 Mr SciRev.

SPOILER
STARGATE SG-1 Season 7 episode FROZEN
This fanfic could be seen as a prequel to that episode.

The TARDIS dematerialised with the Doctor, Tegan, Remmy, Max, Maggie and Wade all on board. The others had elected to stay at the SGC – Stargate Command – , located at Cheyenne Mountain, for the time being. Quinn, Professor Arturo, Diana, Nyssa and Adric were interested in helping out the SGC develop some possible defences from the new combined Kromagg-Goa’uld threat, even though it was unlikely that Earth would be attacked right now. It was no easy task, but Diana, Quinn and Arturo especially helped Sam develop war simulations which were likely to be of great help.

What you need to know:
The Doctor is a Time Lord – a time-traveller from the alien world called Gallifrey who travels in space and time thanks to his TARDIS which looks like a police box, bigger inside than outside. When the Doctor is severely injured or even killed, he will regenerate into a new appearance and body. He is currently in his fifth incarnation (4th regeneration). His thirteenth will be the last.

The Sliders have developed a dimensional incursion technique known as Sliding which allows them to go to different dimensions or parallel universes, but will they ever find the way to their home universe?

The Doctor with his companions – currently an Australian hostess named Tegan, alien refugee from the future Max Evans, irritating young genius Adric, alien orphan and technological expert Nyssa and the Sliders – is on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless and the powerless throughout the whole multiverse of multiple universes. The Doctor’s alteration to the Sliders’ timeline has resulted in multiple changes across various multiverse timelines in Hypertime – ripple effects if you like. Fixing these holes is an important task of the Doctor which has been sanctioned by an angel of God called the White Guardian.

The Doctor had received an emergency beacon, or rather the TARDIS had picked up its signal. It was an old Gallifreyan frequency, not in use any more in the Doctor’s days, and the time point of origin was determined by the Doctor to be millions of years in the past, on Earth itself. The Doctor remembered the legends about the dark times. They were times of chaos. He hadn’t lived those days, but he felt as if he had. Perhaps it was the records of Rassilon he had read in the past. But there were memories awakened in dreams..

What was happening to him? Some day he should try to find out how what these memories were. He did know that the dark times of Gallifreyan history were entwined – connected – with earth’s long-forgotten past.

“Doctor, aren’t there dinosaurs on earth in this time?” Tegan asked. She was not very fond of meeting prehistoric creatures.
“Tegan, don’t worry about that.”
He continued. “The reason why we are going to Antarctica is that for some time, it was the only habitable place on earth since 60 million years ago. It is the source of the signal which I received. The levels of CO2 that is, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere – the main ‘greenhouse gas’ which causes variations in climate – were already in extreme amounts. This was a period of global warming”, he said. “Levels soared to 1000 parts per million, causing a huge decrease in life on earth. No ice at all was left on Earth. Antarctica was the best place for mammals to live, and the rest of the world would not sustain human life,” he said. “Until things went..wrong, deadly wrong. The ice returned, and a killer plague burst out.”

Earth, Antarctica, 50 Million Years BC

The TARDIS materialised within what seemed to be a technologically advanced compartment within some large centre, perhaps a research centre. Tegan looked at the TARDIS console which indicated the date. She was dumbfounded. The Doctor took a brief, casual look and said hmmm while he looked at the monitor showing the surroundings.

Wade said “How could this be possible? This building seems suspiciously modern to me. What do think, Doctor? Could it be a Kromagg building?”
The Doctor replied “No, they did not get to this dimension in this time. About your first question – it’s possible that advanced technological societies existed on your planet, but no traces have been found, unfortunately.”
Remmy said “Is it dangerous, Doctor? Do you think we could explore it?”
“Of course we can. Tegan, you stay on board as you are the most experienced in handling the TARDIS. Wade, please stay too. The rest go out with me.” he replied. Tegan’s face clearly showed she did not like this, but she liked the compliment about her experience.

The Doctor, Remmy, Max and Maggie were walking along a wide passageway decorated with unknown symbols and other strange artefacts. The Doctor noted to the others that the style of the place reminded him of Ancient Gallifrey. It was quite similar.

“This must be a complex of the Ancients, the makers of the Stargates. The Ancients had to choose Antarctica as their home. It’s the only logical explanation” he continued.
Max was amazed. He wondered whether there was any connection with his race. But he did not recognise the symbols. He did, however, feel evil lurking somewhere in the shadows. Perhaps it was following them. He told the Doctor.
“So are these Ancients your ancestors, Doctor?” Maggie asked the Doctor. Both she and Remmy were there when the Doctor hinted at a connection between the Time Lords of Gallifrey and the Ancients. They thought, if the Ancients were perhaps the ancestors of humankind, then wouldn’t that make the Doctor half-human, or was the Doctor actually an Ancient?
“They are my ancestors. But there are differences in our physiognomy, due to the genetic experimentations performed by Rassilon, the first Time Lord. The modifications are what make us Gallifreyans, our second heart connects us to our homeworld and enables us to time-travel safely with no ill-consequences. I would not dream of seriously calling myself half-human. Both Gallifreyans or Ancients, call them as you prefer, and humans themselves have not evolved directly from apes or monkeys, unlike what some would think. And it’s not for nothing that our old archaic language was called Ancient High Gallifreyan.”
He then added “It’s not clear that the Ancients are mankind’s ancestors. Nothing I’ve seen so far has ever told me that, though it is a possibility in this timeline, my timeline. That past is not well known to us, only in legends. The children of the Ancients age slower than Humans and it might take centuries for one to mature into a fully grown adult. A 10-year-old would look just like an 8 or 9-year-old human, but a 16-year-old will appear to be a modern earth teenager. After this Ancient ageing slows dramatically – a 48-year-old Ancient will appear to be an 18-year-old human. Enough, we must be careful not to do anything to alter the timeline’s history.”
“So the building of the Stargate network was just the first step the Ancients took,” Remmy commented.
“The second was the beginning of attempts to conquer time and the eventual development of a non-interference policy by the ruling council. Their culture became stagnant. They went to a different galaxy – the Pegasus galaxy – and eventually returned to earth after millions of years.” the Doctor said.
“These times are known as the Dark Times… Some Ancients rebelled against these restrictions. They altered themselves genetically, giving themselves two hearts and the ability to regenerate using nanotechnology. It cost them a lot, from the inside. They experimented with time travel; they were bold. And those who did this left for a different galaxy, Kasterbouros, in a different time. They lived on Gallifrey, the planet they bonded themselves to, within that galaxy. They realised now that their interventions through time would change timelines one way or the other. Which was why they then ruled to Observe and to never Interfere, as their ancestors did before them.” he continued.

Suddenly a voice was heard before they could go on further. It was a group of robotic soldiers who were ready to pounce upon the Doctor and the others. Max tried to strike at one of them with his alien power. He got him enough to leave him knocked out, but another robotic Jaffa managed to fire his staff weapon at Max, and hit him slightly, slashing his skin. Blood came out and he fell from the pain. Maggie in the meantime fired at some of the other soldiers, using a rifle and she managed to kill a few. But she was not used to fighting these soldiers, so they quickly overcame her. The Doctor and Remmy were captured by the Jaffa as were Max and Maggie. They took them to a central area within the complex, where somebody came out of the shadows to speak to them.

The Doctor recognised the lurking figure. It was none other but Apophis. He had taken over the complex, imprisoning the remaining Ancients. But he was different. The Doctor knew him as a Goa’uld System Lord – but he had not taken that title yet!
“Who have we here?” he asked. He looked at the Doctor. “You.. You are..”
“I am the Doctor?” the Doctor replied.
“You are an Ancient! But different! You will be my next host!”
“Oh, not that again..” Remmy said.
Max was still unconscious from the pain while Apophis examined him. “This one will become my first Prime Jaffa! He is of alien stock, a clone! Implant him with one of us!”
A Jaffa soldier brought a snake or alien larvae (very much like the modern-day Goa’uld larvae) and proceeded to place him next to Max. It attacked his neck and entered him. As soon as it did, this Max let out a scream! His eyes glowed like a Goa’uld’s. He was now taken over by the creature inside him.
“I am Horus!” Max shouted, under the influence of the parasitical creature. The Doctor looked shocked. Memories came back to him from years ago.
Years ago in his previous regeneration, when he still wore that scarf given to him by Madam Nostradamus, he had fought an Osiran – Sutekh was his name – imprisoned in a Pyramid on Mars by another Osiran called Horus thousands of years before.

Was Max going to become that Horus? Was that why he imprisoned his fellow Sutekh. Were the Osirans none other but ancestors or the beginnings of the modern day Goa’ulds?

Yes, that must have been it. It would explain quite a bit.

Why they were never heard of again, why the Doctor had never encountered them again in more recent time periods.

In the TARDIS, Wade and Tegan were becoming worried when they had not heard from the others for some hours.
The TARDIS was in a relatively quiet area in the complex, so no Jaffa were seen. Tegan decided to go outside to look for the others, notwithstanding the fact that the Doctor did not want this. Wade argued with Tegan, saying that this was very dangerous behaviour. Tegan retorted that she had experience. Wade said she had experience too, what with all the parallel worlds the Sliders had travelled to. Wade had some Nitro-9 she had obtained from a parallel world the Sliders had spent some time in, and she kept quite a supply in the TARDIS.

They opened the TARDIS doors and cautiously went out. Wade carried the Nitro-9 while Tegan carried a small torch. They walked down various corridors which were empty. Once at the end, they came to an entrance to a small room with a closed door. Wade put some Nitro-9 next to the door and activated it. Within seconds it exploded, so both Wade and Tegan stood a safe distance away. They met some Jaffa and quite easily, disposed of them with a piece of Nitro-9.

The Doctor and the others were placed in a holding cell which already contained someone. Maggie was curious as to who it would be, probably an Ancient. And in fact, it was Klamedya, a young Ancient or so she seemed like. Maggie thought she was just 18 years old, then she remembered that she must probably be 50 years old as the Doctor had explained earlier. She was taller than Maggie was, very thin and she was elegantly dressed. The Ancients living in this place would have escaped the plague, and gone to the Pegasus Galaxy, via their fabled city-ship Atlantis. The Doctor took out a portable translator device, from one of the pockets of his jacket which seemed to contain all sorts of stuff, to help communicate with her. He could have translated her speech himself – Gallifreyans can translate any language which exists, but why bother? It’s easier to get a device to do it for you. So she explained how she ended up being captured by the Osirans. The Osirans had begun stealing various technological devices from the Ancients and terrorising other worlds. They would claim they had powers capable of blowing up whole planets when they would be using technology stolen from the Ancients. They had infected the base with a viral agent intended to wipe them out paralysing the Ancients before they had the chance to operate their famed superior weapons. The agent would neutralise the proteins and enzymes generated by the Ancient gene which allowed the operation of Ancient technology. Meaning they would not be able to use their weapons at all. But they had miscalculated when they devised it, as they had not accounted for the Ancients ability to heal themselves from most illnesses. She had missed the escape pod because she was not officially supposed to be in the complex. She had managed to stow away aboard the complex so she would get to see this famous complex. Little did she know that it was about to be attacked by some Osirans together with some soldiers and robot “mummies”.

Soon, the Doctor and the others heard explosions. They heard a voice say “stand back, we’ll blow up this door!” after which the door was blown apart.
Small shreds and pieces of metal were all that was left of the door once the explosion subsided. The Doctor, Klamedya, Maggie and Remmy were happy to see their rescuers.

“Wade Wells!” Remmy’s face lighted up with visible joy. The Doctor looked, smiling, at Tegan. He did not need words to show what he felt. Tegan was so happy and relieved that he was still alive.
Suddenly Remmy started coughing. He felt tired, at first, and then somewhat ill.
The Doctor did not take long before he concluded this was due to the virus Klamedya mentioned. He knew his Time Lord physiology would be immune, but the others were all at risk. Klamedya did not seem worried. The Doctor was not expecting what she did next. She put her hand over Remmy and said something in her language which the translator did not quite pick up correctly. She looked more tired than before, and Remmy was completely healed of the virus. The Doctor pointed out that they were supposed to leave before any Osiran – or Goa’uld – came back to check on the explosions. It seemed that not many Osirans and robotic soldiers were present. Some soldiers had been killed by Tegan and Wade, but how many Osirans were there? They had only met one, Apophis, who would be calling himself a Goa’uld soon enough, and Max who became the Osiran Horus.
Tegan looked towards the Doctor and asked how they would rescue Max. The Doctor explained to her, how he had known of Horus the Osiran in his previous regeneration, so he could not rescue him without risking altering established history. Max/Horus was a fixed point in time. Saving him would be altering the Doctor’s past and the very fabric of time would be at risk.
“So we are going to abandon him?” Tegan said, angrily.
“We have no choice. He is going to be instrumental in rallying 740 System Lords in imprisoning a mad Osiran, Sutekh, who would otherwise destroy all life on earth. This is in your past, Tegan, in 5089BC” (referring to events referred to in the classic series episode “Doctor Who – Pyramids Of Mars
“). “I would not risk altering this established timeline or we could easily create a paradox. Sutekh will be imprisoned on an Osiran Pyramid on Mars. Sutekh’s body going to be taken care of – imprisoned – by the System Lords.”

The Doctor, Remmy, Tegan, Klamedya, Maggie and Wade made it to the TARDIS after encountering some more robotic soldiers and blowing them up easily with the Nitro-9. Wade was quite adept at this now, as was Maggie. Klamedya explained how she had sent out the signal on a time-frequency hoping that somebody would respond in the present or in the future. The Ancients had developed an understanding of time which was enough to transmit a signal to the future. The Doctor was aware of this, but he also knew that they also developed a primitive but dangerously unstable form of time travel which was improved by the Time Lord civilisation on Gallifrey using nanotechnology. The Doctor asked Klamedya whether she would join them in the TARDIS. She said it would be dangerous. She did not want to leave as she knew she would carry the virus with her wherever she went. She wanted to stay behind to blow up the place with a huge amount of Nitro-9.

The Doctor and the others left in the TARDIS, after some goodbyes and after she touched the others to be sure they had not been infected by the virus.

After she had exploded the Nitro-9, the whole complex shook, broke up and snow and ice entered inside, trapping everyone inside. She was left frozen in ice, trapping her for millions of years until one day she would be found again.

AUTHORS NOTES

The Ancients returning from the Pegasus Galaxy in 8000BC (date from Stargate Atlantis’ “Before I Sleep”) would establish what became the legend of Atlantis on earth, a place they called Atlantide (meaning Atlantis), in the Mediterranean.
Klamedya is featured (NOT with this name however) in the Stargate SG-1 season 6 episode FROZEN which occurs when she is thawed out…. I had to give her a name.
P.59 of the DR WHO BBC Novel ALIEN BODIES by Lawrence Miles (which mentions a scandal by the President of Malta (???) in 2063 or whereabouts) refers to Faction Paradox and Gallifreyans as humans-plus. So it hints at a connection between Earth and Gallifrey. It also can be the Faction Paradox virus beginning its subtle influence on the Doctor which encourages him to alter the Sliders timeline after all.
The idea of Antarctica being the only habitable part of the earth 60 million years ago is from a news story by The Independent.
I updated the story to include a reference to the Pegasus Galaxy and made sure the references are in continuity with the first episode of Stargate Atlantis, and a reference to the Ancient weapons seen in the new shop as well as in Stargate SG-1’s Lost City episode.
10,000 years ago, the biggest ice shelf collapse occurred in Antarctica – news report by the independent
Updated – modified some Goa’uld anachronistic references, soldiers are no longer Jaffa as the Jaffa were introduced much later in the timeline…
